Subaru XV Crosstrek | Test Drive: 2013

Subaru has all kinds of science.

Take one of his cars, demolish a few inches, add a few plastic body cladding, roof rack and, Voila ... soft-roader.Impreza hatchback is the latest to get this treatment, and while it's a little more involved, which really is basically the core of the transformation to Crosstrek XV in value $ 22,805.But for the help of wonder whether the process was not done otherwise. While the design is a bit on the Impreza hesitate, look exactly as tall rider. And Crosstrek XV definitely behind it all. That little 5-door has a 8.7-inch ground clearance, even more than the Jeep Grand Cherokee, although it sits lower and easier to get into than a conventional compact crossover. Chunky wheels with yellow spoke design combined with unique front and rear bumpers help give the appearance of rail space, especially when done in the paint will look unique Tangerine Orange Pearl. The interior is identical to the Impreza, which means plain, but well-appointed with excellent visibility and plenty of space for a compact look. The main difference is the standard rubber cargo tray to transport soiled equipment behind. Not too much, though, as the 2.0-liter flat-four-cylinder only has 148 hp. All-wheel-drive and five-speed manual transmission is standard, but with a CVT automatic that most buyers will choose, which Crosstrek XV was a little slow getting the current speed on the highway. The tradeoff is when you are there gives 33 mpg, which Subaru says is best in class for all-wheel-drive crossover, even if Crosstrek XV barely qualify as best in class. Unlike many cars today are experiencing a decrease in fuel economy, I see as much as 35 mpg on the current drive. One of them took me to a snow-covered road in which the dirt, even on all-season tires, Crosstrek XV kept me out of the woods. The Vehicle Dynamics Control is not subtle about saving yourself regret, system hard rat-tat-tatting individual brakes to keep the car going straight every time you start getting out of line. Treat it like a bell in the game operation and can be an excellent lesson in the dynamics of the vehicle.Slippery surface or not, Crosstrek XV suspension does a great job in the rough stuff, absorbing the deepest ruts with nary a surprise to the spine, but is a little bouncier than ideal on a paved road.

As with many "gearless" CVT transmission, which Crosstrek XV has a manual mode and paddle behind the steering wheel that allows you to use it as a virtual six-speed. Usually very silly, it's actually pretty useful feature for off-road by giving you more direct control over the power delivery and engine braking when some streets down.

As an alternative a little more extreme to the Impreza, XV Crosstrek type offers a nice package. But do not waste your time, unless you plan to get a little dirty now and in the future, or at least stay where snow will fall. Subaru will not make trouble for people like you.
